The beautiful church at Firle dates back to the 13th Century and occupies a stunning location beneath the South Downs Way that marches in spectacular fashion across the top of the hills high above. A notable interior attraction is an imposing stained glass window created by John Piper (1903 – 1992) that depicts Blake’s “Tree of Life”.
The church houses an albaster effigy of Tudor courtier Sir John Gage wearing the Order of the Garter. The Gage family have been lords of the manor of Firle since the 15th Century. Bloomsbury set writer Virginia Woolf lived in Firle for a while. Her sister, painter and interior designer Vanessa Bell, her son Quentin Bell and live-in lover Duncan Grant are all buried in the churchyard.
Lovely guide to Sussex. Great informative book of my local area and beyond with nice pictures and layout. Has reminded me what a great county Sussex is and not just in my area of Brighton & Hove. We'll be visiting many of the new shops, restaurants and areas in the coming months for sure!
Love this little book!!! Such a great gift to give someone and I even got one for myself. If only I'd seen these when I first moved to Sussex but I now make great use of it in discovering new places :). Will definitely be buying some of the other counties as we holiday around the UK
What a great book. It's small enough to carry around and keep in the glove-box of the car. We've tried a few of the places and found some of our new favorite places to eat and visit. Would recommend.
