Nyetimber, West Chiltington

Nyetimber was the pioneer of English sparkling wine, the first to plant the celebrated grape varieties Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir in 1988 solely for the production of sparkling wine. The estate was first mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1086 and belonged to the Priory of Lewes before the dissolution of the monasteries in 1536, when it became the property of Henry VIII.

In 2006, current Nyetimber owner and CEO Eric Heerema purchased the estate with the sole intention of producing sparkling wines of exceptional quality to rival the best in the world. Since 2006, Eric Heerema has been driving force behind the growth of Nyetimber alongside Cherie Spriggs, Head Winemaker, who won International Sparkling Winemaker of the Year at the 2018 International Wine Challenge, the first time the award had been won by someone outside of Champagne, and the first time the award had been won by a woman.
